Re: Draw Direction and Pattern Repetition
Hi!
I'm able to use an FEM-Workstation in my university the next week. But I'm not sure which run options I have to use and the optimization is not that quick I expected.
The run summary says:
** Windows 7 Workstation SP1 (Build 7601) FEM_L **
** 12 CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz **
** CPU speed 2650 MHz **
** 9900 MB RAM, 24556 MB swap **
The Computer has 12000MB RAM so I set the upper limit on 9500Mb and it got 12 cores, so I used the option "-ncpu 12". But the solver is only using 50% of the CPU. Are there any other options I have to use?

VWT Error: AcuSolve JOB_NOT_STARTED
Hello,
I am a student from germany, working with VWT for building a little F1 car. I have some problems with the VWT: The program didn`t start the AcuSolve analysis.
Here my steps:
1. Importing the model as .stp from SolidEdge
2. Meshing in Hypermesh
3. Exporting as nastran (auto1.nas: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2AjTXWGrBfgXzl6WW9LTGQxMVE/edit?usp=sharing)
4. Building a VWT simulation (Sim1.stmod: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2AjTXWGrBfgZi1kZXAwLTJCQkk/edit?usp=sharing)
5. After starting the simulation I got a JOB-NOT-STARTED error (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2AjTXWGrBfgcEJjcnlLaURfbTg/edit?usp=sharing)
1. System:
Windows 8 Enterprise 64bit
Core i7 3770 (8 cores)
8gb RAM
2. System (virtual)
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
6 Cores
6gb RAM
The error was exactly the same on both Systems.
I hope that somebody can help me and sorry for my bad English,
best regards,
Leon Lettermann

Re: specifying force with respect to crank angle
Hi,
Motion Solve supports AZ command to measure the Angle about Z axis.
In force panel, Change the drop down option to curve and in Independent Variable use `AZ({the_model.b_2.id})`

Re: help with non linear materials, acceleration vs time loading, and more block tutorials in general.
thanks..
I just know the initial velocity of the impact and don't really know how to set the engine file...
do you mean use the rbody/admas in the card edit to make the impactor as rigid?
Can you explain the second statement in your comment please?
I am translating the indep node and applying the ini vel to it..
Can I just create a rigid wall with initial velocity instead of using the impactor?

Re: VWT Error: AcuSolve JOB_NOT_STARTED
Hi Leon,
The job not started is more of a run status, there is perhaps something that is making the run take too long or a problem with the model set up.
In this case the model has 2 duplicate elements that can be identified by going to tool > check elems > duplicates > save failed. then delete them by going to delete > elements > retrieve > delete
Secondly there are free edges in the model, this means the model is not watertight. go to tool > edges > elements > then select all the elements > keep a reasonable tolerance such as 0.0001 and then find edges > you can then preview equivalence > equivalence.
Please make sure you export the model from HyperMesh in “Nastran(Fluent)” format, available in the CFD export tab.
Growing boundary layers on all parts of the vehicle might result in a high number of elements after the volume meshing step and might require a long CPU time for the CFD analysis. Therefore make sure you select only certain parts for boundary layer, in your model I see that the entire model is selected for boundary layer.
Make sure the the wheels are slightly penetrating the ground of the wind tunnel.
Can you try increasing the number of cores, use the desktop icon in the run section, or perhaps try running with the help of a remote server that may be more powerful?
after these necessary changes we will still have to investigate further and try several run parameters.

Connecting two Volume-tetra-meshes, upd shell failed
Hey,
i am trying to connect two components using the identical mesh at the connection area, in this case the outer ring of a bearing at the bearing seat, which later will be different materials.
I used the surface edit -> trim with surfs/plane, with surfs option to trim the components. Then i meshed the bearing rings and afterwards the component containing the seats. After the meshing process HW throws two different error messages: Volume Analysis failed upd shell failed
Also the component "^tmp_2d_for_tetra" is created, which contains faces of the mesh.
Additional information:
Hyperworks 12 is used. Each component can be meshed without problems if the connection surface is not meshed at this point (if its the first one to be meshed). Reducing the element size does not solve the problem. With a larger element size meshing was not possible and orange lines were highlighted to show critical areas. With smaller element-size the component is meshed, but the tmp-component is created anyway. I have run an analysis with a rigid spider and a orthogonal force on the bearing ring. It works, displacement looks reasonable. Then i deleted the tmp-component.
Thanks alot for any explenations or advices.
Regards,
Alexander

Re: Connecting two Volume-tetra-meshes, upd shell failed
Hi Alexander,
Are you using 3D > tetramesh > volume tetra?
I am able to mesh the surfaces with volume tetramesh, using element size of 0.95, I first mesh the component id 3 and then go on to mesh components 1 and 2, there is connectivity and the mesh pattern matches in the contact area
I see no errors in this process.
Please see the attached model.

Re: Connecting two Volume-tetra-meshes, upd shell failed
Hello Alexander and Rahul,
there is some strange behaviour in the model which I can reproduce. Usually the ^tmp component indicates that the 3D meshing went wrong. The last "2D surface mesh" that has been produced, is then stored in the tmp collector and can be used for manual cleanup (stitching edges, etc.).
However in your model, the 3D mesh does complete with an error but the resulting tetras seem to be fine (as Rahul said). So basically it means you can ignore the error message, delete the 2D mesh and continue with your modelling. This seems to be an unintended error message. Can we forward the model to our development?
To make absolutely sure that there are no flaws in the mesh, please create a faces component and then cut through your model, as shown in the following video sequence:
http://screencast.com/t/4gknz4YLA
To avoid the error message, you might also create geometry solids prior to meshing. This has the advantage that you will see the trimmed surfaces between the componentes marked in yellow, as shown here:

Element type of Honeycomb core in Composite Optimization
Dear administrator,
hello. I would like to ask about stacking sequence optimization of sandwich structure composed of CFRP and aluminum honeycomb core. According to the tutorial (http://training.altairuniversity.com/structural/optimization/composites/composite-optimization-of-a-formula-student-monocoque/), shell elements are applied for all materials even core material in composite optimization. But in this case it's difficult to define the material properties for aluminum honeycomb as shell elements for anisotropic material (maybe MAT8 or MAT10?) because in most cases some material properties such kind of Young’s modulus E1, E2 are unavailable from datasheets by suppliers.
My question is, generally which should I model aluminum honeycomb core, as shell elements or as 3D elements? And if 3D elements are used, that is, shell elements (CFRP) and 3D elements (Honeycomb core) are mixed, is it possible that Composite Optimization like the tutorial can be carried out correctly?
Thank you in advance.

When I am creating a new material you only have the choice between MAT1 to10

Large Rotations in Analysis
Hello,
in postprocessing, you might find a behaviour, where your model seems to be rotating very heavily and is deformed in the results view.
The reason might be that you need to apply Non-linear geometry analysis, when having high deformations or rotations. The linear geometry assumption is only valid for small deflections, where the error is negligible. For an example as shown above, please use NLGEOM as a subcase type. See the description in the online help and below.

Get mass and stiffness matrix of a FE-model
Hello everybody,
I am working on a fluid-structure-interaction problem using reduced FE-models (Craig-Bampton method). In the reduction process I get the matrices in form of a punch file. I use these matrices in a CFD-code to calculate the structural behaviour. Now I would like to compare the reduced model with the original one.
Is there a way to receive mass an stiffness matrices of a full FE-model to use it in an external program?
Thanks a lot!

Which version of HyperMesh are you using? do you have the latest updates?
Mat9ORT is listed in the material card image list when you are creating a new material.
