Hi,
I get a question on importing CATIA CAD format. How is hypermesh handle it internally? Is it add a middle step to convert CATIA into Step, then import it into Hypermesh? Thanks

Re: Solid + spring analysis
Hi Vitor,
The problem is most likely due to the application of the moments in your model.
A solid element has only 3 translational and no rotational dofs, In FEA we then need to work around the above fact.
So we create a rigid element connected to the face of the beam where the moment needs to be
applied, with all its dependant nodes on the solid face an(HyperMesh calculates the independent node by itself)

Re: Center of Gravity plot for Assembly
Hi,
I assume there is no easy way to output such a plot.
you have to write an equation where the over all CG (X,Y,Z) is equal to the sum of individual CGs at different time steps.

Questions regarding Contact analysis
From direct email to support -
I have questions regarding contact analysis.
I would like to define two surfaces that can be used for contact analysis in abaqus.
It seems that I could define contact surface using analysis, and contactsurfs.
However, what I realize is that I am not able to export those defined contactsurfs to Abaqus, which should be consisted of 8 nodes.
Also, how could I define interface and surface in the abaqus contact manager window under Tools, Contact Manager?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Questions regarding Contact analysis
Hi,
In the Abaqus user profile you need to use the tools > contact manager alone to define contact surfaces. using analysis > contact surfaces is not an option as you have found.
Please see HM-4310: Defining Abaqus Contacts for 2-D Models in HyperMesh and HM-4320: Defining Abaqus Contacts for 3-D Models in HyperMesh

Re: Hoo to apply periodic boundary conditions
Hi Ralf,
Can you explain very briefly what you mean by periodic boundary conditions? I understand them to be a set of boundary conditions that are often used to simulate a large system by modelling a small part that is far from its edge
Have you seen radioss sub modelling? - http://training.altairuniversity.com/analysis/structural/projects/radioss-submodeling/
The target of this approach is to study one area of the model with taking into account the deformation of the full model through a section force.

Re: Explicit Heat Transfer Analysis with RADIOSS Block
Hi dkr,
Why not simulate the analysis using Optistruct? Have you seen the optistruct tutorials, especially 1085 and 1090

OS-1085: Linear Steady State Heat Convection Analysis
OS-1090: Linear Transient Heat Transfer Analysis of an Extended Surface Heat Transfer Fin

How do you create 6-noded triangle mesh?
Thank you.

Re: How do you create 6-noded triangle mesh
William,
When in 2d > automesh , toggle the second field on the right to second order, see image below.
If you have already meshed, just change the order of certain or all the elements using the order change panel, 2d > order change
see image below
You just need to change the element type in 2d> element types to make sure you are using the right kind of 6 node triangle element
For instance when in the optistruct user profile make sure the tria 6 field reads ctria6

how to give inclined loading condition
From comment to Academic website
Sir,
Could you please explain how to give inclined loading condition for any system?

Re: how to give inclined loading condition
Hi Manoj,
What do you mean by inclined loading? do you mean force for instance inclined at an angle to a coordinate system? and by system do you mean local i.e. your won defined coordinate system or the global system?
To define loads at an angle you can provide the x, y and z components of the load vector and you can give this based on the global system or the local i.e. your own system (this system you will define using the 1d > systems panel) using the toggle. you can also use vectors to define the loads (again you can create the vector before hand using the 1d > vectors panel)
see image below where a force is being created with constant components entry as per a local system.

Re: Creating a 3D cubic shell and applying vibration for linear analysis
Steve,
Firstly it is necessary to determine the analysis and response before we optimize.
You really need to define the analysis type, the load does vary with frequency from what I see, you need to determine what loads to apply and how it varies with the frequency, this is the essence of vibration analysis.
It is simple to determine certain regions as design and non design, however the model must reflect the structure as it is in reality and it must be joined with elements representing the structure, it is not understood by the solver unless it exists as elements.
When you are sure you have identified the analysis, you then need to identify the type of optimization. have you seen the below tutorial?

OS-3030: Random Response Optimization

Re: Hoo to apply periodic boundary conditions
thank you for your quick reply
I mean something like that. Submodelling is an interesting idea. But it wont work for me. Since I want to do changes to the entire structure (wall thickness, mesh, material model ect). So these change would clearly affect the section forces from the sub-modelling.
Maybe you remember my primary field of interest, the modelling of thinwalled honeycomb structures. I want to apply periodic boundary conditions to a unit cell... thus simulating a larger structure with only one cell....
For that, I have to link the displacment on opposite sides of my unit cell. Essentially I have to apply non-zero displacements, to the edges of unit cell. In ABAQUS it is supposedly very easy to apply these periodic boundary conditions.

MBD-Intro file. Printing settings are not available
Hello dear supporter team,
i've found a nice Introduction to MBD under this link: http://training.altairuniversity.com/analysis/multi-body-dynamics-mbd/multi-body-dynamics-intro/
but i can't download or just print it. I thought i would become the opportunity to print it, if I register by scribd. But even this didn't lead me to success. So I need your help. Could you please send this file to me?
Kind regards

Rahul, is there a link where I can get the updates? My university server does not to have the HWsolvers12.0.212.
