solidThinking Evolve allows industrial designers to develop forms faster, using either Windows or OSX. It enables you to capture an initial sketch, explore styling alternatives, and visualize products with realistic renderings generated in real time. Evolve provides organic surface modeling and parametric control, with NURBS-based surfaces and solids and a unique ConstructionTree history feature. It frees designers from the constraints of engineering-oriented CAD tools, while allowing the export of digital models required by others in the product development process. Image

How to separate the Design from the Non-Design Space in HyperMesh / OptiStruct

$

Hello, to define a Non-Design Space for optimization, you need to create a separate component and property. It is necessary to either separate the areas on a geometry level (i.e. before meshing) or on the element level (after meshing). To do this on the geometry, you need to create different geometry areas. The geometry solids or surfaces need to be connected in order to get a coincident mesh on the shared surfaces and lines. This is done using Boolean Operations on 3D geometries and Geometry Cleanup on 2D geometries. After meshing, you still can move areas to the Non-Design component. Please use the "organize" function within HyperMesh. The following movie shows all necessary steps on a simple part: http://screencast.com/t/AO8bdmh9E7 Jan

help with non linear materials, acceleration vs time loading, and more block tutorials in general.

1)Hi, first I want to thank all the support forum moderators for helping us with our questions and models :-) . And I am also grateful for all tutorials available online which have been really helpful. 2)I have recently started to use and learn Radioss Block data. I saw the getting started with radioss bulk videos on this forum ( car crash). I tried the cell phone drop test tutorial. I wonder if there are any more tutorials available to get the basics of radioss bulk. And any way to get more practice using radioss bulk ( e.g, partially completed hm files like we have for hypermesh tutorials) 3) I would like to know how to use acceleration vs time curve (which we can get from experiments like impact/drop etc ) as load in the FEA. 4) I think I am getting how to use some non-linear materials like M36_plas_tab using stress strain curves. But I would like to know more e.g, about hyperelastic materials/ foam materials. Thanks!

Hi Arbhaval, thank you for your compliments. my best suggestion would be go through the online help (users guide, theory manual etc.. under RADIOSS Block), there are lots of examples for implicit and explicit analysis available with a very good explanation of cards (material, property etc..) and also tutorials. This shall help you to understand different types of contacts, materials, how to use curve data etc.. http://www.altairhyperworks.com/hwhelp/Altair/hw12.0/help/altair_help/altair_help.aspx

Re: Evaluation of Barrier Load Cells with HyperGraph/HyperView

Hi Emad, The best solution for this could be using the generic ascii reader of HyperView, Let me explain this in a simple way with an example, Firstly as you say you will need to generate the model file with the model information such as node and element data so that you can first read in the model file (the blank mesh without results) Image Then you will need to create a hwascii file with the element id and the result data, Image You can load in the model info from dyna as you say or really any supported solver format eg the *.inp or *.bdf or even .dat etc in the load model file area and then load in a hwascii file in the load result file area. This would allow you to contour the results in the hwascii file onto the element. Image A generic ASCII reader is available which allows you to bring custom results directly into HyperView. The Altair ASCII format is useful for reading the results of any in-house or propriety codes which are saved in a generic format. This flexible format supports multiple data types (scalars, vectors, and tensors) spanning across various simulation types (linear, modal, and transient), and allows user defined labels for the data types. Read about how to create them and find examples etc in the help documentation following the navigation below, HyperWorks Desktop Reference Guides Overview > HyperWorks Desktop Reference Guide: Generic ASCII Reader

Hi Burkey, The model has very detailed features and a few defects. You can either repair the geometry in your CAD software or alternatively work around it as below As explained you will have to first Delete > solids > without the bounding surfaces Go to geom > defeature > duplicates > all surfaces selection > find duplicates > delete. (you will find 8 duplicate surfaces) Then find and repair the geometry for free edges using quick edit for example you can then surface mesh the geometry with a small element size like 0.001 Then eliminate any free edges using tool > edges Export this mesh as a .nas file > import into acuconsole.

arbhaval, Given that you have Solid elements you can do the below to easily apply pressure on solid faces Go to tool faces and create face elements over the relevant component. Then go to geom > surfaces > from FE > elements by face > select just an element on the face of the component where you want the pressure to be applied > create a surface Delete the face elements Place this surface in a new component using tool > organize Then go to analysis > pressures > apply pressure on the above created surface Then go to loads on geom and map the loads onto the elements

Print Postscript

Hello everybody, it appears to me that the print to postscript functions has been removed from HyperMesh. In the users guide it still appears: http://www.altairhyperworks.com/hwhelp/Altair/hw12.0/help/hm/hmbat.htm?customization_panels.htm However, the "postscript" subpanel doesnt exist under option in my HyperMesh installation (Vers. 12.0) And the shortcuts ctrl+F3 or ctrl+F4 dont work either anymore. The question is, whether it is my HyperMesh installation that is missing this functions or has it really been removed. I remember back in the day when I was working with HyperMesh 10.0 I was using it. Regards Ralf

Hi Ralf, The post script panel is now called graphics files, just press o in the keyboard and go to graphics files or go to preferences pull down and then to graphics files. ctrl+F3 or ctrl+F4 do not exist anymore ctrl+F2 creates a bmp file and ctrl+F6 creates a jpeg. Please see latest shortcuts here http://www.altairuniversity.com/2011/06/10/hyperworks-keyboard-shortcuts/ You can also use the image capture toolbar from view > toolbars > hw > image captureImage

Arbhaval, I presume you are only interested in RADIOSS block, is that right? Hereon RADIOSS bulk data is part of and called Optistruct, RADIOSS only represents RADIOSS block. By tutorials in this forum do you mean the training center? Have you gone through the videos in this post? http://www.altairuniversity.com/support-forum/?mingleforumaction=editpost&id=2113&t=385.0 The list of examples in the help documentation is a good place to start Altair RADIOSS > RADIOSS Tutorials and Examples > Examples: List of Examples These use model files that are ready for analysis already and part of the HW installation, just go to the demo folder in the installation directory and you will find these files. The tutorials in the help documentation is also a good place to start Altair RADIOSS > RADIOSS Tutorials and Examples > Tutorials > Large Displacement Finite Element Analysis > HyperMesh

Hey guys, I got some really good results. But I still got the thickness problem. It's hard to become acquainted with shape optimization. Would it work to use my results as design space and make an optimization without a draw-direction? Or is there another way?ImageImage

program starting problems

I have installed first the licence manager and loaded the licence file ensured me a few weeks ago by one of your colleagues. Then the components of HW were installed, as it was described in the documentations. When I try to start any application, it stops with different error messages like "segment error occurred" or "the program stopped abruptly". I have just formatted the whole hard disc and re-installed windows 7 enterprise, and still have the same problem. Please help me to solve the problem. Thanks a lot

Hi You do not need to install the license manager for a standalone license file, I see from your mail attachment that the license file you are using is a standalone license file (also called a node locked license file). The difference between a server based license and a node locked license is that in a server based license, each feature has a COUNT field. Please uninstall the license manager, Rename the license file to altair_lic.dat Place the license file in the security folder found within your installation directory <install location>Altair\12.0\security eg C:\Program Files\Altair\12.0\security Restart HyperWorks. This should fix the problem, apart from the above also make sure there is a valid working directory set up for HyperWorks and that the setting files are deleted. Hi Benjamin, One way is, play around with different Draw types (none, split, single). Without any Draw direction, the solver may suggest a design with material removed on the sides which is not so manufacturable. but still you can give it a try. the other way is as I suggested in my previous post use shape optimization the findout the feasibility of reducing the thickness.

Glance, You should find a section like “Ethernet adapter local area connection” when you run the “ipconfig /all” I only see a wireless LAN section. Please mind, that on laptops it’s a common case that the network card is deactivated when you are running on the battery. Please check, when you plug in your power supply and reboot the machine is there an active network card? You can check this using the following command: Run “ipconfig /all” on a DOS-Shell a.) Without power supply b.) With power supply (and reboot) You should find a section like “Ethernet adapter local area connection”. If this is not the case please check if your network card is deactivated. please additionally check your computers Host ID, by using the almutil -hostid application from the Start --> Altair --> Tools --> admin tools --> almutil hostid.
